Tarot reading is an ancient form of divination that uses a deck of 78 cards to explore situations, emotions, relationships, opportunities and the different paths that may lie ahead. Rather than simply predicting the future, Tarot can offer a different perspective on what is happening in your life and help bring greater clarity to situations where you may feel uncertain or need guidance.

A skilled Tarot reader looks beyond the individual meaning of each card. They consider the imagery, symbolism, position of the cards and the relationship between them, while also drawing upon intuition to interpret the overall message of the reading.

What Is Tarot?

A traditional Tarot deck contains 78 cards, divided into the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana.

The Major Arcana represents significant life experiences, lessons, turning points and periods of personal or spiritual development. The Minor Arcana often relates more closely to everyday life, including relationships, emotions, communication, work, decisions and practical circumstances.

Each Tarot card has traditional meanings and symbolism, but a reading involves much more than memorising definitions from a book. The cards form a story, and an experienced reader learns how to interpret that story in relation to the person sitting in front of them.

How Do Tarot Readers Work?

A Tarot reader will usually begin by shuffling the cards while focusing on the person receiving the reading and, where appropriate, the question or situation they would like guidance about.

Cards are then selected and placed into a Tarot spread. Different positions within the spread can represent different aspects of a situation, such as the past, present, potential future, challenges, influences or possible outcomes.

The Tarot reader interprets the cards individually and collectively, looking at the patterns and messages appearing throughout the spread.

A good Tarot reading should feel like a conversation rather than simply being told what is going to happen. It can help you look at a situation from another perspective, recognise patterns and consider possibilities that you may not previously have noticed.

How Do Tarot Readers Use Intuition?

Intuition plays an important part in the way many Tarot readers work.

Although understanding traditional Tarot meanings provides the foundation of a reading, an intuitive Tarot reader may also notice particular symbols, colours, emotions or impressions when looking at the cards.

Sometimes one element of a card may stand out far more strongly than another. A particular combination of cards may also create a message that goes beyond their individual textbook meanings.

This is where knowledge and intuition work together.

For me, Tarot is not about frightening people with predictions or telling someone that their future is fixed. I use the cards as a supportive tool for insight and guidance, helping you explore what may be influencing your life and the choices available to you.

Can Tarot Cards Predict the Future?

Tarot can highlight potential directions, opportunities and likely outcomes based on the circumstances surrounding you at the time of your reading, but I don’t believe that your future should be viewed as something permanently set in stone.

We all have free will.

Our choices, actions and circumstances can change the direction our lives take. Tarot can therefore be particularly valuable when you are facing a decision, experiencing change or simply looking for greater understanding about where your current path may be leading.

Who Can Read Tarot Cards?

Anyone can begin learning Tarot.

You don’t have to consider yourself psychic or have a special spiritual gift before picking up a Tarot deck. Many people start simply because they are fascinated by the cards and want to understand their symbolism.

Learning the traditional meanings provides a strong foundation, but confidence develops through practice. Over time, many Tarot readers find that their intuition becomes stronger and they begin recognising connections between cards much more naturally.

Some people learn Tarot purely for personal development and self-reflection, while others eventually choose to read for friends, family or professionally.

What Can You Ask During a Tarot Reading?

People come for Tarot readings for many different reasons. You might be looking for guidance around relationships, career, family, personal development, a decision you’re considering or simply the direction your life is taking.

You don’t necessarily need to arrive with a specific question either.
