Exploring Evidential Mediumship

My Journey at Arthur Findlay College

As a Medium and Psychic, my quest for deeper connections with the Spirit Realm is a continuous journey. This year, I took a significant step by attending the esteemed Arthur Findlay College, a place renowned for its commitment to developing mediumship skills. Under the guidance of my tutor, Paul Jacobs, I faced challenges that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Paul is known for his rigorous teaching style, and he certainly put our class of 14 students through our paces. While the experience was demanding and at times exhausting, I wholeheartedly embraced his innovative approach to connecting with spirit.

Our lessons were structured into one-and-a-half-hour segments, interspersed with much-needed coffee breaks. These breaks were essential, allowing us to recharge both physically and mentally before diving back into the next segment of instruction.

Each day began with a unique exercise in the Sanctuary, where we paired up and sat opposite one another. Paul encouraged us to connect with spirit and relay messages to our partners based on what we received. As seasoned Mediums know, each of us has our own distinctive way of connecting with the spirit world—whether through clairvoyance, clairaudience, or other intuitive methods. However, Paul had a specific directive: he wanted us to focus on “feeling the essence” of the spirit communicator rather than relying on visual imagery. This was a challenging shift for me, as my natural inclination was to engage my clairvoyance whenever I delivered a message.

Over the course of four intensive days, my fellow students and I grappled with the concept of “feeling the essence.” By the final day, we had made significant progress, learning to sense our spirit communicators on a profound level. I believe that once you connect with the essence of a communicator, you can also tap into one of your chosen “Clairs.” This dual connection enhances the evidence you can provide, allowing you to deliver an “evidential message” to the recipient.

A crucial aspect of mediumship is ensuring that the person receiving the message recognises the spirit you are connecting with. It’s not enough to simply describe a generic figure, like a “Granny in an apron”—this approach lacks specificity and can feel like “fishing” for information. Instead, the goal is to provide clear, identifiable evidence that resonates deeply with the recipient.

When you connect with the essence of a spirit communicator, you should invite them to share their experiences from life. For instance, if they had a physical characteristic, such as a missing leg, you would ask them to help you feel that absence. You can direct your inquiry to a specific individual or open it up to the group, seeking recognition for details like “a man with one leg.” The key is to be as specific as possible, perhaps noting, “it was the left leg, below the knee.” This level of detail ensures that the recipient is confident you are connecting with someone they know—be it a father, uncle, grandfather, or friend.

Once the connection is established, it’s essential to convey the message from the communicator and express gratitude for their presence.

I had a personal experience during one of our exercises that exemplified this process. I connected with a gentleman whose identity was initially unclear to me. The only message I received was the phrase “belts and braces.” Struggling to feel the essence of this communicator, I was reminded by my tutor not to rely on my clairvoyance. I shared the message with my classmates, hoping someone would recognise it. My tutor identified the phrase but encouraged me to delve deeper and ask the spirit for more information. Unfortunately, as I attempted to connect further, my clairvoyance kicked in, and I was halted from proceeding, which was quite frustrating.

This experience highlighted a key point: as Mediums, we should be allowed to connect in whatever way feels natural to us to provide meaningful evidence to the recipient. In this case, my tutor had a friend who once owned a shop selling “belts and braces,” which made the message resonate with him.

I do, however, appreciate the lesson Paul was imparting: the importance of first feeling the essence of the person before directing that connection to an individual or the audience at large.

Another fascinating exercise involved standing in front of approximately 150 people and relaying the first three words that came to me. My specific words were “Gravy,” “yellow cab,” and “Grandfather’s pocket watch.” Unsure of what was expected, I was then instructed to connect with a spirit communicator and ask them to elaborate on the word “Gravy.” In that moment, I sensed a lady with me who insisted, “I’m Nanna! Not Nan, not Gran—I’m Nanna!” I shared this with the audience, and a few hands went up in recognition.

Next, I was prompted to expand on what “Nanna” wanted to convey about the “Gravy.” Suddenly, I had a vivid vision of her in the kitchen, making gravy from scratch. She  showed me Bovril, water, and meat juices simmering on the stove. She conveyed that this gravy was her signature dish, and she was well-known within the family for making it. As I relayed this information, most hands in the audience went down, except for one lady who remained engaged.

Paul then asked me to inquire about the significance of the “yellow cab.” The communicator revealed that it was a small yellow cab from New York, which was sitting on her kitchen table. I shared this detail with the audience, and the same lady’s hand stayed up, indicating her recognition of the spirit I was connecting with.

Finally, I was prompted to expand on the “pocket watch.” The communicator informed me that this pocket watch belonged to the recipient’s grandfather and that both of them were together in the spirit realm, watching over her granddaughter, who had connected with me through this message.

After I finished relaying the messages, Paul asked the recipient to provide feedback. She confirmed that I was “spot on” about her “Nanna” and that her signature dish was indeed “gravy,” although she humorously noted that everyone in the family disliked it. However, her “Nanna” remained proud of her culinary creation. The recipient also confirmed that her “Nanna” insisted on being called “Nanna” and would become quite upset if anyone referred to her by any other name.

Moreover, she verified that the small yellow cab was indeed on her dining room table and had been purchased in New York. Lastly, she confirmed that her grandfather had a pocket watch that was very dear to him.

I had no idea what the purpose of this exercise was or how I would tie the three seemingly unrelated items together to deliver a coherent reading. Yet, through the connection with spirit, I was able to do so, and I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to connect with them in this way.

This experience reinforced the importance of being open to the messages we receive, no matter how fragmented or unusual they may seem. It also highlighted the power of evidential mediumship—providing specific, recognisable details that resonate with the recipient, ensuring they know they are connecting with a loved one.

As I continue my own journey in mediumship, I am excited to apply these insights and deepen my connection with the Spirit Realm. Each experience, whether challenging or enlightening, contributes to my growth as a Medium, allowing me to deliver messages that are both evidential and meaningful. I look forward to sharing more of my journey with you as I explore the profound connections that exist between our world and the spirit world.
