Understanding Schumann Resonance: Science, Spirituality and the Earth’s Natural Frequencies

Have you ever heard somebody refer to the Schumann Resonance as the Earth’s heartbeat?

It’s a phrase that appears frequently in spiritual communities, particularly when people are talking about energy shifts, spiritual awakening or changes in collective consciousness.

But what actually is Schumann Resonance?

This is one of those subjects where I think it is especially important to separate what we know scientifically from what we believe or experience spiritually.

I am a spiritual person. I believe in energy, intuition and a connection to something greater than ourselves. But I also believe spirituality works best alongside discernment and common sense.

We don’t have to turn every spiritual belief into a scientific fact for it to have meaning to us.

So let’s look at what Schumann Resonance actually is, why the figure 7.83 Hz is mentioned so often, what scientists know about it and why it has become such an interesting subject within spiritual communities.

What Is Schumann Resonance?

Schumann resonances are naturally occurring electromagnetic resonances within the space between the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere.

You can think of the Earth and the ionosphere above us as forming an enormous electromagnetic cavity.

Lightning occurs around the world every day. Those electrical discharges produce electromagnetic waves, and some of these waves travel around the Earth within this Earth-ionosphere cavity.

At certain frequencies, the waves reinforce one another and form resonances.

These are known as the Schumann resonances.

The first or fundamental resonance occurs at approximately 7.8 Hz, with additional resonances occurring at higher frequencies, roughly around 14 Hz, 20 Hz and beyond. The precise frequencies and their intensity can vary because conditions within the atmosphere and ionosphere are not static. NSSL

So Schumann Resonance isn’t simply a New Age theory.

The electromagnetic phenomenon itself is real and measurable.

Where things become more complicated is when we begin discussing what those frequencies mean for human beings and spirituality.

Why Is 7.83 Hz Called the Earth’s Heartbeat?

You will often hear the fundamental Schumann Resonance of approximately 7.83 Hz described as the “heartbeat of the Earth”.

I think that is a beautiful description, but it is better understood as a metaphor, rather than suggesting that the planet literally has a heartbeat at 7.83 Hz.

Earth isn’t producing one perfectly fixed frequency.

Schumann resonances fluctuate as conditions in the Earth-ionosphere system change.

Lightning activity is particularly important because thunderstorms around the world continually contribute energy to these resonances. Researchers can therefore study Schumann resonance measurements to learn more about global lightning and atmospheric electrical activity. NSSL

For me, knowing the science doesn’t make the subject any less fascinating.

If anything, I think it makes it more remarkable.

We live on a planet surrounded by natural electromagnetic activity, with electrical storms occurring thousands of miles apart contributing to waves capable of travelling around the globe.

That is extraordinary without us needing to embellish it.

Does the Schumann Resonance Stay at 7.83 Hz?

This is another area where I regularly see confusion online.

You may see posts claiming:

The Schumann Resonance has risen.

Or:

The Earth’s frequency has suddenly increased.

Sometimes this is then presented as proof that humanity is undergoing a spiritual awakening.

But the science is more complicated than that.

The commonly quoted 7.83 Hz refers approximately to the fundamental resonance. There are several resonance modes, and measurements can vary in frequency, amplitude and intensity depending on atmospheric and ionospheric conditions.

A dramatic-looking Schumann resonance chart therefore doesn’t automatically mean that “the Earth’s frequency” has permanently increased.

This distinction matters.

We can remain spiritually curious without interpreting every change on a scientific instrument as evidence of a spiritual event.

Schumann Resonance and Human Health

This is where I want to be particularly careful.

There is genuine scientific interest in whether naturally occurring electromagnetic fields, including Schumann resonances and other extremely low-frequency fields, interact with biological systems.

Researchers have explored possible relationships with brain activity, circadian rhythms, cardiovascular measurements and cellular processes. Some studies and reviews have reported interesting associations or proposed mechanisms. PubMed

But that is not the same thing as establishing that 7.83 Hz heals the body, improves mental health or produces particular health benefits.

The research remains developing and uncertain. A 2025 review discussing possible biological effects of Schumann resonance specifically concluded that further research is required to understand the mechanisms and implications for human health. PubMed

That means I would be cautious about claims such as:

Schumann Resonance cures anxiety.

7.83 Hz heals your cells.

or

Increasing Schumann Resonance causes physical symptoms.

Those are much stronger statements than the evidence currently allows.

If listening to relaxing frequency music, meditating or spending time in nature helps you feel calmer, there is nothing wrong with enjoying that experience.

But it shouldn’t replace appropriate medical or mental-health support when that is needed.

Schumann Resonance and Brainwaves

One reason Schumann Resonance has attracted so much attention is that some of its frequencies sit within frequency ranges also used when describing electrical activity in the human brain.

This similarity is fascinating, and researchers have investigated possible relationships between atmospheric electromagnetic activity and biological electrical activity. Some scientific papers propose possible links, but the mechanisms and significance remain uncertain. PubMed

These frequency ranges overlap

to:

Therefore the Earth’s frequency controls human consciousness.

Those are two very different claims.

I think we can hold curiosity without rushing to certainty.

Sometimes the most honest answer is:

We don’t know yet.

And there is nothing unspiritual about saying that.

Why Is Schumann Resonance So Popular in Spiritual Communities?

This is where the subject becomes particularly interesting to me.

Within spirituality, Schumann Resonance is often associated with:

• grounding and connection to the Earth
• meditation
• energetic sensitivity
• spiritual awakening
• shifts in consciousness
• collective consciousness
• feeling more connected to nature

Some people describe feeling tired, emotional, energised or unusually sensitive when they believe Schumann resonance activity has changed.

Those experiences may feel completely real to the person having them.

But establishing what caused them is another matter.

Feeling different on a particular day doesn’t necessarily mean Schumann Resonance caused the feeling.

Our sleep, stress, hormones, physical health, relationships, environment, expectations and countless other factors can affect how we feel.

This is why discernment is so important within spirituality.

We can honour an experience without automatically deciding we know its cause.

Schumann Resonance and Spiritual Awakening

There are many online claims connecting changes in Schumann Resonance with spiritual awakening.

The idea is usually that as humanity becomes more conscious or spiritually aware, the Earth’s electromagnetic frequency changes alongside us.

I understand why that idea appeals to people.

There is something beautiful about imagining humanity and the Earth awakening together.

But at present, there isn’t good scientific evidence demonstrating that fluctuations in Schumann Resonance are caused by humanity spiritually awakening or that they trigger a spiritual awakening.

That doesn’t mean you cannot find personal spiritual meaning in the natural rhythms of the Earth.

It simply means we should distinguish spiritual interpretation from scientific evidence.

Is Schumann Resonance Connected to a Mass Awakening?

This is another question I see frequently.

Some people believe unusual Schumann resonance readings are evidence that humanity is moving into a higher level of consciousness.

Personally, I find the wider conversation about collective awakening fascinating.

But I don’t think we need to use Schumann Resonance as proof that it is happening.

More people are questioning old beliefs.

More people are exploring spirituality.

People are talking more openly about healing, boundaries, emotional wellbeing and personal development.

Those changes are interesting in their own right.

Whether they correspond to a measurable change in the Earth’s electromagnetic resonances is a separate scientific question.

Can Schumann Resonance Predict Earthquakes or Natural Disasters?

You may also encounter claims that Schumann Resonance can predict earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or other natural disasters.

Researchers do study electromagnetic phenomena in relation to the Earth and atmosphere, but that does not mean a Schumann resonance chart provides us with a reliable earthquake or disaster-prediction system.

The existing scientific use of Schumann resonances is much more grounded.

Because lightning is a major source of the resonances, measurements can provide information about global thunderstorm activity and atmospheric electrical processes. NSSL

That’s already scientifically valuable.

We don’t need to turn it into something it hasn’t been demonstrated to be.

Schumann Resonance and Climate

There is also genuine scientific interest in Schumann resonances as a way of studying aspects of atmospheric activity and global lightning.

Lightning patterns are related to atmospheric conditions, which is why researchers have explored how Schumann resonance observations may contribute to understanding global lightning variability and aspects of the climate system. NSSL

But again, we need to be careful with language.

That doesn’t mean Schumann Resonance controls the climate.

And it doesn’t mean monitoring 7.83 Hz allows us to predict climate change.

It means that these electromagnetic measurements can form one part of scientific research into our complex atmosphere.

Reconnecting With Nature

This is where my scientific caution and my spiritual beliefs sit very comfortably together.

Whatever we eventually discover about Schumann Resonance and biology, I don’t need scientific proof of a spiritual frequency to know that I value my connection with nature.

Sometimes simply stepping outside changes how we feel.

We notice the sky.

We hear birds.

We feel the wind.

We stop staring at a screen.

We breathe.

We become present.

You don’t need to measure the electromagnetic frequency beneath your feet to appreciate that connection.

For me, grounding is partly spiritual, but it is also wonderfully ordinary.

It is remembering that we are human beings living on this Earth rather than minds permanently caught up in thoughts, worries and technology.

Spirituality, Science and Keeping an Open Mind

I don’t believe spirituality and science need to be enemies.

Science asks us to test, measure and question.

Spirituality can invite us to explore meaning, personal experience and questions that science may not currently be able to answer.

Problems arise when we confuse the two.

A spiritual belief shouldn’t automatically be presented as scientifically proven.

And something not yet scientifically demonstrated doesn’t necessarily tell us what somebody is or isn’t allowed to believe spiritually.

I prefer to leave room for both curiosity and discernment.

I can say:

“This has spiritual meaning for me.”

without needing to say:

“Science proves this spiritual belief is true.”

That distinction has become increasingly important to the way I teach through Age of Awakening.

How to Stay Grounded When Reading About Energy Shifts

If you follow spiritual content online, you will probably encounter dramatic posts about Schumann Resonance.

A graph may suddenly look unusual and somebody announces:

“Huge energy incoming.”

“The Earth has shifted frequency.”

“Ascension symptoms are beginning.”

Before becoming worried, stop.

Ask where the information came from.

Is the person explaining what the graph actually measures?

Are they distinguishing amplitude from frequency?

Are they linking to the original scientific data?

Are they presenting a spiritual interpretation as though it were established science?

And perhaps most importantly:

Is the information helping you understand something, or simply making you frightened?

Spirituality should not require you to live in fear of the next graph, solar event, portal, frequency change or prediction.

You are allowed to step away from information that makes you anxious.

My Thoughts on Schumann Resonance

I find Schumann Resonance fascinating.

The scientific reality alone is remarkable: lightning occurring around our planet generates electromagnetic waves that can travel through the Earth-ionosphere cavity and form measurable global resonances.

I don’t need to turn that into something it isn’t for it to feel extraordinary.

Spiritually, I also love the reminder that we are part of nature rather than separate from it.

Whether future research discovers deeper biological relationships with these natural electromagnetic fields remains to be seen. There is research exploring that possibility, but significant questions remain. PubMed

I can explore.

I can question.

I can listen to my intuition.

And I can say “I don’t know” when the evidence isn’t there.

For me, that isn’t a weakness in spirituality.

It is part of practising it responsibly.

We can explore what our connection to the Earth means to us spiritually.

We can remain open to future discoveries.

And we can recognise the difference between what has been demonstrated and what we personally believe.

For me, spirituality has never been about having every answer.

It is about continuing to learn, continuing to question and continuing to grow.

Stay curious. Stay grounded. And never be afraid to ask whether something you have been told is actually true.
