The Law of Attraction: A Grounded Guide to Manifesting
Have you ever noticed that when something becomes important to you, you suddenly begin seeing opportunities connected to it everywhere?
Perhaps you’ve decided you want to change career and suddenly you notice conversations, courses or opportunities you might previously have overlooked. Maybe you’ve decided you want healthier relationships and become much more aware of the behaviours you will — and won’t — accept.
Within spirituality, experiences like these are often connected with the Law of Attraction and manifestation.
The basic idea is that what we focus our attention and energy upon can influence the direction our lives take.
But I think there is much more to the Law of Attraction than simply thinking positively and waiting for the Universe to deliver everything we’ve asked for.
For me, manifestation is also about becoming clear about what you want, recognising what may be holding you back, trusting yourself, noticing opportunities and being prepared to take action when those opportunities appear.
You can set the intention.
You can ask the Universe for guidance.
But you also have to be willing to walk through the door when it opens.
What Is the Law of Attraction?
The Law of Attraction is a spiritual and philosophical belief based around the idea that our thoughts, beliefs, emotions and intentions can influence what we attract or create within our lives.
You may have heard it described as:
“Like attracts like.”
Within Law of Attraction teachings, positive thoughts and emotions are often said to attract positive experiences, while negative thoughts are believed to attract more negativity.
Personally, I think we need to be careful about taking that idea too literally.
Life is much more complicated than that.
Bad things don’t happen to somebody because they failed to think positively enough, and difficult experiences are not proof that somebody has somehow attracted them through the wrong vibration.
That way of thinking can create unnecessary guilt and self-blame.
Instead, I prefer to look at the Law of Attraction as a spiritual framework for becoming more conscious about where we place our attention, what we believe is possible and what actions we take towards the life we want to create.
What the Law of Attraction Is — and What It Isn’t
The Law of Attraction doesn’t mean pretending everything is wonderful when it isn’t.
It doesn’t mean ignoring grief, anger, fear or disappointment.
And it certainly doesn’t mean blaming yourself whenever something difficult happens.
Being spiritual doesn’t require you to be positive every minute of every day.
We are human.
We experience difficult emotions because life sometimes gives us difficult things to deal with.
For me, manifestation isn’t about denying reality.
It’s about asking:
Where am I now?
Where would I like to be?
What can I change?
What do I need to let go of?
What step can I take next?
That feels far more empowering than waiting for something outside of ourselves to change everything for us.
Start by Becoming Clear About What You Actually Want
Many people know exactly what they don’t want.
They don’t want the job they’re in.
They don’t want the relationship they’re in.
They don’t want to feel stuck.
They don’t want to worry about money.
But when you ask them what they do want, the answer can be much harder.
Clarity matters.
If you want change, give yourself time to think about what that change would genuinely look like.
Instead of simply saying:
“I want to be happy,”
ask yourself:
What does happiness look like to me?
Does it mean more freedom?
More time with your family?
A different career?
A loving relationship?
Greater confidence?
More financial stability?
A quieter life?
The clearer you become about what matters to you, the easier it becomes to recognise opportunities that move you towards it.
Be Careful What You Think You Should Want
Sometimes the things we are trying to manifest aren’t actually what we want.
They are what society tells us we should want.
The bigger house.
The perfect relationship.
The impressive job title.
More money.
More possessions.
More success.
There is nothing wrong with wanting any of those things, but ask yourself whether they genuinely matter to you.
Manifestation becomes much more meaningful when your intentions reflect your own values, rather than somebody else’s idea of what a successful life should look like.
Your dream life doesn’t need to look impressive to anybody else.
It simply needs to feel right for you.
Visualisation and the Law of Attraction
Visualisation is one of the practices most commonly associated with manifestation.
This might involve closing your eyes and imagining yourself achieving a goal or creating a vision board containing pictures and words representing the life you would like to create.
I think visualisation can be useful because it encourages us to become specific.
Don’t just imagine having a new career.
Imagine what your working day looks like.
Where are you?
What kind of work are you doing?
How do you feel when you wake up in the morning?
What has changed in your life?
Then ask yourself the important question:
What would I need to do to move closer to that life?
That’s where visualisation begins to turn into action.
Affirmations Can Help — But They Need to Feel Believable
Affirmations are another popular manifestation practice.
You may have seen affirmations such as:
“I am wealthy.”
“Everything I desire comes easily to me.”
“I attract abundance effortlessly.”
There is nothing wrong with using affirmations like these if they resonate with you.
But if part of your mind immediately responds with “No I’m not!”, you may find gentler affirmations more helpful.
Try:
“I am becoming more open to new opportunities.”
“I am learning to trust myself.”
“I am capable of making positive changes in my life.”
“I am open to receiving support and guidance.”
“I am taking steps towards the life I want to create.”
For me, affirmations work best when they support change rather than ask us to pretend something is already true when we don’t believe it.
Gratitude and Manifestation
Gratitude is often talked about within the Law of Attraction.
And I do believe gratitude can be incredibly powerful — although perhaps not because it acts like a magical order form to the Universe.
Gratitude changes where we place our attention.
When life is difficult, our minds can naturally become focused on everything that is wrong.
Taking a moment to recognise what is still good doesn’t erase the difficult things.
It simply reminds us that they aren’t the whole picture.
You might be grateful for:
- somebody who checked in on you
- a peaceful cup of tea
- your pet
- having somewhere warm to sleep
- a conversation that made you laugh
- something you learned
- a beautiful sunset
- simply getting through a difficult day
Gratitude doesn’t have to be enormous.
Sometimes the smallest things matter most.
Your Energy Matters — But Perhaps Not in the Way You Think
Within spiritual circles, you’ll often hear people talking about “raising your vibration.”
I understand what people mean by this, but I don’t believe you need to be frightened of having a bad day because you think you’ll attract something terrible.
For me, looking after your energy means becoming aware of what drains you and what restores you.
Who leaves you feeling exhausted?
What environments make you feel uncomfortable?
What makes you feel peaceful?
Where are you constantly giving more than you’re receiving?
Are you allowing enough time to rest?
Are you surrounding yourself with people who support your growth?
This is where energy work becomes practical.
Sometimes raising your energy isn’t about listening to a particular frequency or repeating an affirmation.
It might mean saying no.
It could mean setting a boundary.
Perhaps you need to turn your phone off and give yourself some space.
And occasionally, it means walking away from something that continually damages your peace.
And sometimes it’s simply getting some rest.
Fear Doesn’t Mean You Are Blocking Your Manifestation
This is something I really want to emphasise.
You don’t have to eliminate every fear before something good can happen to you.
Fear is a normal human emotion.
In fact, sometimes we become frightened precisely because something matters to us.
You might desperately want a new career but feel frightened about leaving the security of your current job.
You might want a loving relationship but fear being hurt again.
You might want to start a business but worry that you’ll fail.
The presence of fear doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t move forward.
Sometimes courage is simply deciding:
“I’m frightened, but I’m going to take the next small step anyway.”
Take Inspired Action
This is probably the part of manifestation I feel most strongly about.
You cannot expect your entire life to change while refusing to participate in that change.
If you want another job, look for opportunities.
Update your CV.
Learn something new.
Speak to people.
Apply for positions.
If you want to build a business, begin researching what you need.
If you want healthier relationships, learn about boundaries and recognise the behaviours you are no longer willing to accept.
If you want greater confidence, start doing small things that prove to yourself that you are capable.
Manifestation and action don’t contradict one another.
I believe they belong together.
Set your intention.
Ask for guidance.
Then meet the Universe halfway.
Notice the Opportunities You Might Previously Have Missed
Once you become clear about what you want, something interesting can happen.
You start noticing things.
A conversation suddenly feels relevant.
Someone recommends a book.
An opportunity appears.
You hear about a course.
You meet somebody who gives you an idea.
Was the opportunity sent by the Universe?
Did your intention make you more aware of something that was already there?
People will answer that differently depending upon their beliefs.
Personally, I don’t think we always need to know.
What matters is that you noticed it.
The next question is:
What are you going to do with it?
Ask Your Guides and Angels for Support
Within my own spiritual practice, I believe in asking my Spirit Guides and Angels for support and guidance.
But I don’t ask them to make every decision for me.
I might ask:
“Please guide me towards what is for my highest good.”
“Help me recognise the opportunities that are right for me.”
“Give me the courage to take the next step.”
Then I remain open.
Guidance doesn’t always arrive as a dramatic sign.
Sometimes it comes through a conversation.
Sometimes an idea suddenly makes sense.
Sometimes something doesn’t work out and we later realise it redirected us somewhere better.
And sometimes we simply have to make a decision using our own judgement.
Spiritual guidance should support your own discernment — not replace it.
Don’t Become Obsessed with Signs
Once people begin exploring manifestation, it can be tempting to look for confirmation everywhere.
Angel numbers.
Feathers.
Songs.
Dreams.
Repeated words.
Coincidences.
Signs can feel meaningful, and I enjoy them too.
But you don’t need a sign before making every decision.
If you are constantly asking the Universe whether you should do something, you can gradually stop trusting yourself.
Your intuition matters.
Your common sense matters.
Your experience matters.
Your ability to weigh up a situation matters.
Sometimes you don’t need another sign.
Sometimes you already know.
Manifestation Doesn’t Mean Controlling Other People
This is another important boundary.
The Law of Attraction isn’t about controlling somebody else’s choices.
You may want a loving relationship, but another person still has free will.
You may hope somebody returns to your life, but you cannot manifest another person’s consent or force them to behave the way you want.
Instead of focusing on one particular person, you might set an intention for:
a healthy, loving and mutually respectful relationship.
Then remain open to what that might look like.
Sometimes what we think we want isn’t necessarily what is best for us.
What If Your Manifestation Doesn’t Happen?
Not everything we ask for will happen exactly as we imagined.
That doesn’t mean you failed.
It doesn’t mean your vibration was too low.
And it doesn’t mean you weren’t positive enough.
Sometimes circumstances are outside our control.
Sometimes another person’s choices affect the outcome.
Sometimes our goals change.
Sometimes we discover something better.
And sometimes life simply doesn’t give us an explanation.
Be careful of any spiritual teaching that makes you feel personally responsible for every painful thing that happens in your life.
Spirituality should empower you, not burden you with guilt.
Trust the Process Without Giving Away Your Power
Trust is an important part of manifestation for me, but trust doesn’t mean becoming passive.
You can trust that things will unfold while still making decisions.
You can surrender what you cannot control while taking responsibility for what you can control.
There is a difference between surrender and giving up.
Sometimes surrender simply means saying:
“I’ve done what I can. I’m going to stop forcing this now and allow things to unfold.”
That can bring an enormous sense of peace.
The Law of Attraction and Self-Trust
Ultimately, I think manifestation brings us back to ourselves.
What do you want?
What do you believe you deserve?
Where are you settling?
What are you afraid to change?
What opportunities are you ignoring?
Where do you need stronger boundaries?
What would you do if you trusted yourself a little more?
These questions can sometimes reveal far more than another manifestation technique ever could.
The more you understand yourself, the easier it becomes to recognise which desires genuinely belong to you.
A Simple Law of Attraction Practice
You don’t need an elaborate ritual.
Take a piece of paper and write down one thing you would genuinely like to change or create in your life.
Then ask yourself:
- What do I actually want?
- Why does this matter to me?
- What is currently standing in my way?
- What part of this situation can I control?
- What is one realistic step I can take?
- What support or guidance might I need?
- What do I need to let go of?
Then choose one action.
Not ten.
One.
Take that step and see where it leads.
Final Thoughts on the Law of Attraction
I believe there is something very powerful about intention.
When we become clear about what we want, we begin directing our attention differently.
We notice opportunities.
We question old beliefs.
We become more aware of what is and isn’t working.
We start making different choices.
And from a spiritual perspective, we may also become more open to guidance, synchronicities and opportunities that seem to appear at exactly the right moment.
But I don’t believe manifestation is about controlling every outcome.
Nor is it about pretending negative emotions don’t exist.
For me, the Law of Attraction is most useful when it becomes a partnership between intention, spirituality, self-awareness and action.
Ask for what you want.
Visualise it.
Write it down.
Pray about it if that feels right for you.
Ask your Guides and Angels for support.
Then take the next step yourself.
You don’t need to know exactly how the whole journey will unfold.
Sometimes you only need enough courage to take the next step.
And that step may lead somewhere even better than the destination you originally imagined. 💜
