What Is Clairvoyance? Signs, Meaning and How to Develop It
Have you ever closed your eyes and suddenly seen an image in your mind that you weren’t consciously trying to create?
Perhaps a person’s face has appeared unexpectedly during meditation. Maybe you’ve experienced a flash of colour, a symbol, a place or an object that seemed completely random at the time but later felt meaningful.
Within psychic and spiritual development, experiences like these are sometimes associated with clairvoyance.
Clairvoyance is often described as clear seeing, but I think that phrase can sometimes give people the wrong impression.
You don’t necessarily have to physically see Spirit standing in front of you.
For many people who describe themselves as clairvoyant, the experience is much subtler. Images may appear internally through what we often call the mind’s eye.
Learning to understand those impressions can be fascinating, but developing clairvoyance isn’t about believing that every picture in your mind has come from Spirit.
It’s about learning how your own mind works, becoming more aware of your intuition and developing the discernment to recognise the difference between imagination, memory, visualisation and something that feels genuinely unexpected.
What Is Clairvoyance?
Within spiritual and psychic practice, clairvoyance describes the experience of receiving intuitive information visually.
It is one of what are commonly known as the Clairs.
Other Clairs include clairaudience, associated with words and sounds; clairsentience, associated with feelings and sensations; and claircognisance, often described as an unexplained sense of knowing.
If you’d like to explore these different forms of intuitive awareness more broadly, my article How to Enhance Psychic Skills is a useful place to start.
Clairvoyant impressions may be experienced as:
- colours
- faces
- objects
- symbols
- places
- short scenes
- flashes of light or imagery
- memories that appear unexpectedly
- images during meditation
- imagery associated with dreams
- visual impressions during psychic or mediumship practice
Everybody experiences intuitive development differently.
Some people naturally work visually, while others are much more aware of feelings, words or a sense of knowing.
There is no better or worse way to receive information.
What Does Clairvoyance Feel Like?
This is probably one of the most useful things to understand.
People sometimes imagine clairvoyance as watching a film playing in front of their physical eyes.
For some people, visual experiences may feel vivid. For many others, however, the experience is much more subtle.
Think about somebody you know well.
Without looking at them, can you picture their face?
Now imagine a red rose.
You probably have some sense of the rose in your mind even though there isn’t actually one in front of you.
That internal visual space is often what people mean when they talk about the mind’s eye.
A clairvoyant impression may appear within that same mental space, but rather than consciously deciding what to picture, the image seems to arrive unexpectedly.
It may last only a second.
You may see a colour.
An object.
A face.
A place.
Or something symbolic that doesn’t immediately make sense.
The temptation is to analyse it straight away.
Try not to.
First, simply notice what appeared.
Clairvoyance or Imagination?
Almost everybody who begins developing clairvoyance asks this:
“How do I know I’m not just imagining it?”
It’s a very sensible question.
Imagination is not the enemy of psychic development.
In fact, visualisation exercises deliberately use imagination to strengthen our ability to create and hold mental imagery.
The challenge is learning the difference between something you’ve consciously created and something that appears spontaneously.
Suppose I ask you to imagine a blue door.
You deliberately created that image.
Now imagine you’re sitting quietly later and a bright yellow bicycle suddenly appears in your mind for no obvious reason.
That’s different.
It still doesn’t automatically mean the bicycle was psychic information.
It could be memory, association, imagination or something your subconscious mind has produced.
But because you didn’t deliberately create it, it may be worth noting.
The important thing is not to force an explanation.
Common Signs Associated With Clairvoyance
People exploring clairvoyance sometimes report experiences such as:
- spontaneous images appearing during meditation
- seeing colours in the mind’s eye
- vivid dreams
- faces appearing unexpectedly in their thoughts
- symbols appearing repeatedly
- visual impressions during psychic exercises
- suddenly picturing a place or object
- imagery appearing during mediumship
- being naturally good at visualisation
- receiving information more easily through pictures than words
None of these things alone proves that somebody is clairvoyant.
Dreams, imagination, memory and normal visual processing can all produce vivid imagery.
Instead of asking “Does this prove I’m clairvoyant?”, I think a much healthier question is:
“What am I experiencing, and is there a pattern?”
That’s where journalling and practice become valuable.
How to Develop Clairvoyance
Developing clairvoyance doesn’t need to be complicated.
The exercises I prefer begin with learning to use your imagination deliberately before moving towards observing spontaneous imagery.
There’s no pressure to see anything.
You’re developing awareness rather than trying to pass a test.
1. Begin With Meditation
Meditation is one of the foundations of my own spiritual practice.
Find somewhere comfortable where you won’t be disturbed.
Close your eyes if that feels comfortable and allow your breathing to settle.
Don’t try to stop every thought.
Simply become still.
Notice what naturally passes through your mind.
Thoughts may appear.
Memories may arise.
You might see colours or random imagery.
Don’t chase any of it.
Let it come and go.
Even ten minutes of regular meditation can help you become much more familiar with your own internal world.
And that familiarity is important when developing any psychic ability.
2. Practise Visualising Simple Objects
Start with something very simple.
An apple is perfect.
Close your eyes and imagine an apple in front of you.
What colour is it?
Can you see its shape?
Does it have a stalk?
Are there marks on its skin?
Now mentally turn the apple around.
Imagine cutting it in half.
See the inside.
You’re deliberately using imagination here.
That’s the point.
Try the same exercise with other objects:
a candle
a flower
a cup
a key
a feather
a crystal
The better you understand deliberate visualisation, the easier it can become to recognise imagery that appears without conscious effort.
3. Work With Colours
Colours are another simple exercise.
Close your eyes and imagine red.
Allow your mental field to fill with that colour.
Then try blue.
Green.
Yellow.
Purple.
White.
Don’t worry if you can’t literally see a solid block of colour.
People visualise differently.
Some experience strong imagery while others have more of a vague impression.
Neither is wrong.
4. Try Photograph Exercises
Photographs can be useful for psychic-development practice.
Ask a friend to choose a photograph of somebody you don’t know and place it face down.
Before looking at it, become still.
Notice whether any imagery appears.
Perhaps you see:
a garden
a dog
the sea
a particular colour
a house
a uniform
Write everything down before turning the photograph over or receiving any information.
Then compare your impressions with what your friend knows.
Don’t force a connection.
If you pictured a dog and there isn’t any meaningful connection with a dog, record it as a miss.
Being willing to be wrong is an important part of learning.
5. Practise With Symbols
Clairvoyant information is often described as symbolic rather than literal.
For example, somebody might receive an image of a rose.
Does that mean there is literally a rose?
Perhaps.
But it might also represent love, an anniversary, a garden, somebody’s name, a memory or absolutely nothing relevant at all.
This is why context matters.
You can practise by choosing simple symbols and writing down what they mean to you personally.
For example:
Bridge – transition or connection
Key – opportunity or solution
Door – change or something opening
Tree – family, growth or grounding
Water – emotion or movement
These aren’t universal psychic definitions.
Your associations may be completely different.
Build your own symbolic vocabulary rather than memorising somebody else’s.
6. Keep a Clairvoyance Journal
A journal is one of the most useful tools you can have.
Record:
- the date
- what you were doing
- the image you received
- whether it was spontaneous or deliberate
- what you thought it might mean
- whether it later became relevant
- impressions that matched
- impressions that didn’t match
That last one matters.
If you record only the impressive experiences, you aren’t getting an accurate picture of your development.
Psychic development requires honesty with yourself.
A journal helps you notice genuine patterns rather than relying on memory.
7. Explore Your Dreams
Dreams can be incredibly vivid and symbolic.
They can also reflect memories, emotions, worries and experiences from everyday life.
I don’t believe every dream should automatically be interpreted as a spiritual message.
But keeping a dream journal can help you become much more familiar with your subconscious imagery.
Keep a notebook beside your bed.
When you wake, write down whatever you remember before reaching for your phone or beginning your day.
Record:
- people
- places
- colours
- symbols
- emotions
- unusual objects
- recurring themes
Then leave it.
You don’t need to interpret everything immediately.
After several weeks, you may notice patterns that weren’t obvious at the time.
Clairvoyance and Clairaudience
As you develop, you may discover that your intuitive experiences don’t fit neatly into one category.
Perhaps you see an image and receive a word at the same time.
You might picture a person and suddenly become aware of their name.
That’s why I don’t think people need to become too obsessed with labels.
The Clairs simply give us a useful framework for describing different experiences.
If words, names or sounds seem more natural to you than imagery, you may find my guide What Is Clairaudience? useful.
You may ultimately discover that several intuitive senses work together.
Clairvoyance and Mediumship
Clairvoyance can also form part of mediumship.
During mediumship, a practitioner may receive visual impressions they associate with somebody who has passed to Spirit.
That might include:
a face
an item of clothing
a house
a flower
a vehicle
an occupation
a place
a memory
an object with significance
But receiving an image is only the beginning.
The important question is whether the information has meaning for the recipient.
This is one reason I place such importance on Evidential Mediumship.
If I receive an image during mediumship, I give what I actually receive.
I don’t want to build an elaborate story around one small impression.
Evidence should be allowed to stand on its own.
Don’t Add to What You Receive
This is one of the most valuable lessons I can give anybody developing psychically.
Imagine that during an exercise you suddenly see a red car.
That’s what you received.
A red car.
Don’t immediately turn that into:
“I’m seeing your father driving a red car when he was young and he’s showing me a happy family holiday.”
Unless you actually received those additional details, you’ve moved from receiving into interpreting.
Give the information first.
Red car.
Then allow the other person to respond.
This is particularly important in evidential mediumship.
Clairvoyance and the Third Eye
Within many spiritual traditions, the third-eye chakra, usually associated with the area between the eyebrows, is linked symbolically with intuition, insight and inner vision.
Some people like to include third-eye visualisation in their spiritual practice.
You might imagine a gentle indigo or violet light around that area while meditating.
I would treat this as a spiritual visualisation rather than something you need to physically “open”.
There is no need to force anything.
And you don’t need to worry that you’re somehow spiritually blocked if you don’t see images.
Everybody develops differently.
Reiki, Energy Work and Clairvoyance
Reiki and clairvoyance are different practices, but some people find that energy work makes them more aware of subtle sensations, emotions or intuitive impressions.
During Reiki, you’re often quiet, focused and paying close attention to your experience.
That can naturally create an environment where intuitive thoughts or images become easier to notice.
But Reiki doesn’t guarantee clairvoyance.
And becoming clairvoyant isn’t the purpose of Reiki.
If you’re interested specifically in energy healing, you can explore my Reiki courses and spiritual-development courses.
Nature, Grounding and Psychic Development
You don’t need to spend an imaginary day in a mystical forest waiting for signs from animals to develop clairvoyance.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is simply go outside.
Walk.
Notice your surroundings.
Look at the sky.
Observe colours.
Study the shape of leaves.
Listen to birds.
Feel the ground beneath your feet.
Nature brings your attention back into the present moment.
If a deer crosses your path, enjoy seeing the deer.
You don’t automatically need to ask:
“What message is the universe sending me?”
Sometimes a deer is simply a deer.
I actually think that attitude can make spiritual experiences more meaningful, because we’re not desperately searching for signs in everything around us.
Protection and Grounding
Before spiritual or mediumship practice, I personally like to begin with protection.
My own practice involves connecting with Divine Source Energy and using prayer and intention.
You may have your own way of doing this.
Some people visualise white or golden light surrounding them.
Others prefer grounding exercises or meditation.
Protection shouldn’t come from fear.
For me, it creates a clear boundary around my spiritual work.
When you’ve finished practising, close the exercise.
Bring your attention back to your body.
Move around.
Have something to drink.
Eat if you need to.
Go outside.
Carry on with normal life.
Being spiritually aware and being grounded should go together.
Don’t Force Images
Trying too hard is one of the easiest ways to become frustrated.
You sit down and think:
“Right, I’m going to see something.”
Then nothing happens.
So you try harder.
And harder.
Eventually you’re so focused on producing an image that you can’t tell whether you’re receiving anything or simply constructing it.
Relax.
Let the experience unfold.
If nothing comes, that’s okay.
Try again another day.
Psychic development isn’t a performance.
Don’t Make Important Decisions Based Only on Psychic Impressions
This is important.
Even if you receive an image that feels incredibly strong, don’t allow it to become the sole reason for making an important decision.
Even if you receive an image that feels incredibly strong, don’t allow it to become the sole reason for making an important decision.
For example, if you see an image during meditation that you interpret as relating to your health, speak to an appropriate healthcare professional.
When it comes to money, look at the facts before making a decision.
Similarly, with relationships, communicate openly with the person involved rather than relying solely on a psychic impression.
And don’t tell somebody else that they must do something because you received a psychic image about them.
Intuition can form part of our reflection. However, it shouldn’t replace evidence, communication or professional advice.
And don’t tell somebody else that they must do something because you received a psychic image about them.

What If I Can’t Visualise?
Some people find mental imagery very difficult or don’t experience it at all.
That doesn’t mean you’re spiritually blocked.
And it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.
You may naturally experience intuition through feelings, words or simply a sense of knowing instead.
Don’t compare yourself with somebody who claims to see incredibly detailed visions.
Your development belongs to you.
Explore what comes naturally.
If you’re interested in developing your wider intuitive awareness rather than concentrating on one Clair, How to Enhance Psychic Skills contains exercises for broader psychic development.
Psychic Development Should Empower You
Something I feel strongly about is that spiritual development should make you more confident in yourself, not dependent upon another person.
Teachers can guide you.
Courses can give you structure.
Exercises can help you practise.
But nobody else should have authority over your intuition.
Be particularly cautious of anybody who tells you that you have a dangerous spiritual blockage, that only they can open your third eye, or that something bad will happen unless you pay them for spiritual work.
That isn’t the way I teach.
Your development should belong to you.
Continue Developing Your Clairvoyance
Clairvoyance is just one area of psychic development.
As you practise, you may discover that visual impressions are your strongest intuitive sense.
Or you may realise that you naturally receive more through feelings, words or knowing.
Both discoveries are valuable.
If you would like structured guidance, my Psychic Development Course explores psychic awareness through practical exercises and different forms of intuitive perception.
You can also explore Telepathy Training if you’re interested in experimenting with mind-to-mind exercises, or read about Evidential Mediumship if your interest is developing towards Spirit communication.
The important thing is not to rush.
Final Thoughts
Clairvoyance can be a fascinating part of spiritual and psychic development.
But developing clairvoyance isn’t about trying to see extraordinary things everywhere you look.
It’s about awareness.
Learning how your mind works.
Recognising imagination.
Noticing spontaneous impressions.
Recording what happens.
Accepting when you’re wrong.
Remaining curious when something surprises you.
And developing enough confidence to say:
“I don’t know what that image meant.”
You don’t have to explain everything.
Some experiences may feel deeply spiritual.
Others may turn out to have completely ordinary explanations.
And some may remain unexplained.
That’s okay.
For me, spiritual development isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about remaining open, grounded and willing to learn while developing discernment, confidence and trust in yourself.
Take your time.
Enjoy the process.
And allow your own intuitive awareness to develop in the way that feels natural for you.
