Can Tarot Predict Feelings?
One of the most common questions people bring to Tarot is about another person’s feelings.
Does he love me?
Is she thinking about me?
Does my ex still have feelings for me?
Is this person interested in me romantically?
I completely understand why.
When we care about somebody and don’t know where we stand, uncertainty can be incredibly uncomfortable. Naturally, we want answers.
Tarot can be a valuable tool for exploring relationships and emotions, but I think we need to be very clear about what the cards can and cannot tell us.
For me, Tarot isn’t a way of proving what is happening inside somebody else’s mind.
A reading may help you reflect upon a relationship, recognise patterns, explore possibilities or understand your own feelings more clearly.
But another person’s private thoughts and emotions belong to them.
The cards can’t verify them as fact.
That’s an important distinction, particularly when emotions are involved.
Can Tarot Tell You How Someone Feels?
Tarot cards contain rich emotional symbolism.
Cups can relate to feelings and relationships.
Swords may highlight thoughts, communication or conflict.
Wands can suggest attraction, passion or action.
Pentacles may bring attention to stability, commitment or practical considerations.
Certain Major Arcana cards can also introduce powerful relationship themes.
Because of this, a reader may interpret a spread as reflecting particular emotional dynamics.
However, an interpretation isn’t proof.
If the Two of Cups appears when you’re asking about somebody, a reader may associate it with connection, mutuality or emotional exchange.
That doesn’t allow us to state:
“This person definitely loves you.”
There may be other explanations depending upon the question, surrounding cards and circumstances.
That’s why context matters so much in Tarot.
If you’re still learning how individual cards work, my guide to Understanding Tarot Cards explains the Major and Minor Arcana, suits, symbolism and card meanings in much more detail.
What Can a Feelings Tarot Reading Actually Show?
I prefer to think of a feelings reading as a reflective tool rather than a way of entering another person’s mind.
A reading might encourage you to explore:
the emotional atmosphere surrounding a relationship, patterns you’ve noticed, communication between you, your expectations, what you may be overlooking, and what you need from the situation.
Sometimes the most valuable card isn’t the one you hoped would tell you how somebody else feels.
It is the card that makes you ask:
“How do I actually feel about this?”
That question can be far more useful.
Why We Want Tarot to Give Us Certainty
Relationships can bring enormous uncertainty.
Perhaps somebody’s behaviour is inconsistent.
Maybe you’ve had a disagreement.
Someone may have stopped communicating.
Or perhaps you’re attracted to somebody but don’t know whether they feel the same way.
In those moments, it’s tempting to keep reaching for the cards.
You want certainty.
You want reassurance.
You want an answer.
I understand that.
However, Tarot can become unhelpful if we’re using it to avoid uncertainty altogether.
Sometimes there simply isn’t enough information yet.
And sometimes the answer needs to come from the other person rather than the deck.
The Suit of Cups and Feelings
If you’re exploring emotions through Tarot, Cups are naturally important.
The suit of Cups is traditionally associated with Water and themes such as emotion, relationships, intuition, connection and love.
But that doesn’t mean every Cup card equals romance.
The cards contain many different emotional themes.
For example, the Ace of Cups can be associated with emotional beginnings or openness.
The Two of Cups may suggest connection, partnership or mutual exchange.
The Five of Cups often brings themes of disappointment, grief or focusing upon what has been lost.
Meanwhile, the Eight of Cups can be associated with walking away or recognising that something no longer fulfils you emotionally.
So even within one suit, there is a wide range of emotional experience.
The Lovers Doesn’t Automatically Mean They’re in Love with You
This is an important one.
Imagine you’re asking about somebody and The Lovers appears.
It’s very easy to become excited and think:
“That’s it. They love me.”
But The Lovers has broader meanings.
It can relate to relationships and attraction, but it can also involve choices, values, alignment and important decisions.
The surrounding cards matter.
The question matters.
And the real-life circumstances matter.
One card shouldn’t be used to make a definite statement about somebody else’s private feelings.
The Two of Cups Doesn’t Guarantee a Relationship Either
The Two of Cups is another card people naturally associate with relationships.
And understandably so.
Its traditional symbolism can suggest partnership, connection, attraction or emotional exchange.
But again:
Tarot isn’t a contract.
Drawing the Two of Cups doesn’t guarantee that a particular relationship will happen.
People have free will.
Circumstances change.
Feelings change.
And sometimes a card’s meaning may relate to something other than the interpretation we initially hoped for.
This is why I encourage students to remain curious rather than immediately turning a positive-looking card into a prediction.
What About the Three of Swords?
At the other end of the spectrum, some cards can frighten people.
The Three of Swords is a good example.
Its imagery often shows a heart pierced by swords, so it’s easy to immediately think:
Heartbreak. Betrayal. The relationship is over.
But again, slow down.
It may relate to emotional pain.
Perhaps difficult communication.
A disappointment.
Something that needs to be acknowledged.
Or an existing hurt you’re carrying into the situation.
Don’t allow one dramatic-looking card to convince you that something terrible is definitely going to happen.
Read the whole spread.
Can Tarot Tell You If Your Ex Misses You?
You can certainly ask Tarot about a past relationship.
But I wouldn’t tell somebody that a spread proves their ex misses them.
The cards may prompt reflection on the emotional themes surrounding the relationship.
Perhaps unresolved feelings emerge within the reading.
Maybe the cards encourage you to look at what the relationship taught you.
But there’s another question I often think is more useful:
Why is knowing whether they miss me so important to me right now?
Are you hoping they’ll return?
Do you need closure?
Are you struggling to let go?
Do you want reassurance that the relationship mattered?
Those questions bring the focus back to you.
And that is something you can actually work with.
Can Tarot Tell You If Someone Is Thinking About You?
Again, I would be cautious.
A Tarot spread cannot independently verify another person’s thoughts.
A reader may interpret cards as suggesting communication, memories, connection or reflection.
But saying:
“Yes, they’re definitely thinking about you right now”
goes further than the cards can establish.
If somebody wants to communicate with you, their actions will usually tell you far more over time than repeatedly asking Tarot whether they’re thinking about you.
Tarot and Real Communication
Sometimes the simplest answer isn’t the most mystical one.
If you’re in a relationship and need to know how somebody feels, talk to them where appropriate and safe.
Listen to what they say.
But also look at what they do.
Are their actions consistent?
Do they communicate?
Do you feel respected?
Can you express your needs?
Do their behaviour and words match?
Tarot can help you reflect on a relationship.
It shouldn’t replace communication.
Actions Matter More Than a Tarot Card
This is particularly important when you’re emotionally invested in somebody.
Imagine a Tarot reading appears to suggest that someone has deep feelings for you.
But in real life they:
rarely contact you, repeatedly let you down, refuse to communicate, ignore your boundaries or make no effort to build a relationship.
Don’t use the cards to explain away what is happening in front of you.
You deserve to evaluate the actual relationship, not only the one you hope may exist underneath somebody else’s behaviour.
Tarot should help you see more clearly.
It shouldn’t encourage you to ignore reality.
Can Tarot Predict Future Feelings?
Feelings change.
You probably don’t feel exactly the same about every person in your life today as you did five years ago.
Neither does anybody else.
Life happens.
People grow.
Circumstances change.
New information appears.
Relationships evolve.
A reading may be interpreted as showing a possible emotional direction based upon the current circumstances, but that doesn’t make somebody’s future feelings fixed.
This is one of the reasons I don’t teach Tarot as an absolute prediction system.
If you’d like to understand my wider approach to readings, Understanding Tarot Card Readings explains how I approach possibilities, free will, spreads and intuitive interpretation.
Why Repeatedly Asking the Same Question Can Cause Confusion
This is something I see beginners do quite often.
You ask:
“How does this person feel about me?”
You draw three cards.
You’re not sure you like the answer.
So you shuffle again.
Then again.
Then you try a different spread.
Then another deck.
Before long, you have fifteen cards on the table giving you several different stories.
Now you’re more confused than when you started.
If you’ve completed a reading, give it some space.
Reflect on it.
Write it down.
Then put the cards away.
Tarot shouldn’t become a way of repeatedly asking until you receive the answer you wanted.
Be Aware of Confirmation Bias
When we desperately want a particular outcome, we’re naturally more likely to notice information that supports it.
This can happen with Tarot too.
Suppose you want somebody to love you.
You draw The Lovers, Two of Cups and Seven of Swords.
You might become so excited about the first two cards that you barely consider the third.
Or perhaps you interpret every challenging card as:
“They’re frightened because their feelings for me are so strong.”
Be careful.
Ask yourself whether you’re genuinely interpreting the cards or trying to make them tell you what you already hope is true.
Self-awareness makes you a better Tarot reader.
Using Tarot to Understand Your Own Feelings
This is where I think Tarot can become particularly valuable.
Instead of constantly asking:
“How do they feel about me?”
try asking:
“How do I feel within this relationship?”
“What am I hoping for?”
“What am I afraid of?”
“What am I overlooking?”
“What do I need emotionally?”
“What boundary might I need?”
“What would a healthy outcome look like for me?”
Suddenly the cards become a tool for self-awareness rather than reassurance-seeking.
And importantly, those questions focus on something you actually have influence over — yourself.
Better Questions to Ask Tarot About Relationships
The quality of the question can completely change a reading.
Instead of:
“Will they come back?”
try:
“What do I need to understand about this relationship?”
Instead of:
“Do they love me?”
try:
“What should I pay attention to within this connection?”
Instead of:
“Are we destined to be together?”
try:
“What is this relationship teaching me?”
And instead of:
“When will they contact me?”
you might ask:
“What would support me while this situation remains uncertain?”
These questions put some of your power back into your own hands.
Do You Need to Be Psychic to Read Feelings in Tarot?
You don’t need to identify as psychic to use Tarot.
A reader can work with symbolism, traditional meanings, context and the relationships between cards.
Some readers also incorporate intuitive or psychic impressions.
If you’re interested in understanding that distinction, I’ve explored it in Are Psychics Real?, where I look at intuition, psychic experiences, evidence and healthy scepticism.
Whatever your approach, I think it’s important to distinguish between an impression and a fact.
Trust Your Intuition — But Use Discernment
Intuition can be a valuable part of Tarot.
Sometimes a particular image immediately catches your attention.
Perhaps a card feels especially significant.
Or you become aware of an interpretation before you’ve consciously analysed the spread.
Explore that.
But don’t assume every strong feeling must be intuitive guidance.
Our hopes, fears and previous experiences influence us too.
That’s why I encourage both intuition and discernment.
They can work together.
What If a Tarot Reading Makes You Anxious?
Put the cards down.
Seriously.
You don’t have to keep reading.
Tarot should not leave you frightened of your future or obsessed with another person’s feelings.
Take a break.
Go for a walk.
Talk to somebody you trust.
Return to everyday life.
If you’re repeatedly using Tarot because anxiety is making you feel that you need reassurance, the most helpful thing may be to step away from the deck for a while.
Your wellbeing matters more than completing a reading.
Tarot Shouldn’t Make You Dependent
A Tarot reader shouldn’t become the person you need to consult before every relationship decision.
And your own deck shouldn’t become that either.
You are allowed to make decisions without asking the cards.
You can trust yourself.
You can change your mind.
You can communicate.
You can set boundaries.
You can decide that somebody’s behaviour isn’t good enough for you even if a Tarot spread looked incredibly romantic.
The cards are a tool.
You are still the person living your life.
Learning to Read Relationship Tarot Responsibly
If you’re learning Tarot, relationship readings can teach you a great deal because they involve emotion, symbolism and nuance.
But they’re also an area where ethical practice matters.
Be careful about making definite statements about people who aren’t present.
Avoid telling somebody:
“Your partner is definitely cheating.”
“Your ex definitely wants you back.”
“This person is your soulmate.”
Those statements can have real consequences.
Instead, explain what you’re seeing in the cards, what it may symbolise and what possibilities the person might want to consider.
Leave room for uncertainty.
A responsible reader doesn’t need to pretend to know everything.
Learning Tarot with Age of Awakening
If you’d like to develop your understanding of Tarot in a structured way, you can explore my Tarot and spiritual development courses.
My approach is about understanding the traditional foundations while gradually developing your own intuitive awareness.
I want students to become confident readers.
But I also want them to become responsible readers.
That means respecting free will, understanding boundaries and recognising the difference between guidance and certainty.
Final Thoughts: Can Tarot Predict Feelings?
So, can Tarot predict feelings?
I believe Tarot can be a valuable way to explore emotions, relationship patterns and possibilities, particularly when it’s used as a tool for reflection.
However, the cards cannot prove exactly what another person privately thinks or feels.
Nor can they guarantee how somebody will feel in the future.
People change.
Relationships change.
Circumstances change.
And everybody has free will.
If you genuinely want to understand another person, pay attention to communication, behaviour, consistency and how the relationship actually makes you feel.
Then, if you choose to use Tarot, let it offer another perspective rather than the final word.
Ask questions.
Stay curious.
Use your intuition.
But keep your discernment too.
And above all, remember:
Tarot should help you trust yourself more — not make you dependent upon the cards for answers. 💜
